Answer
Carney, Nikita. “All lives matter, but so does race: Black lives matter and the evolving role of social media.” Humanity & society 40.2 (2016): 180-199.
This article highlights the ways in which young people of color actively participated in the Twitter conversations that followed the tragic 2014 deaths of Eric Garner and Michael Brown. These social media discussions are part of a wider national conflict over racial and racist rhetoric, therefore the hashtags “#AllLivesMatter” and “#BlackLivesMatter” are studied as contested signs that represent dominant ideologies in this article that examines Twitter as an emerging public sphere, drawing on critical theory and race theory as well as the relatively new practice of using Twitter as a source of data for sociological analysis.
The present article comprises a qualitative textual analysis of a subset of Twitter tweets spanning from December 3, 2014, to December 7, 2014, which followed the officers’ non-indictments in the killings of Eric Garner and Michael Brown. Following these high-profile tragedies, adolescents of color adopted a variety of techniques to influence the national discourse on race, as evidenced by the Twitter debates.
